La zona sorge nella valle del Torrente Lerna caratterizzata da maestosi contrafforti rocciosi. La vegetazione della valle è costituita da querceti xerofili a roverella e, nei versanti più freschi, è presente, invece, un bosco più mesofilo con cerro, carpino nero, pioppo tremolo e castagno mentre lungo il torrente si trova la tipica vegetazione igrofila con pioppo nero, salice rosso e ontano nero.

Dal punto di vista faunistico rivestono un ruolo primario i volatili fra i quali spiccano: allocco, gufo, poiana, sparviero e gheppio; nei calanchi non e difficile notare l'albanella reale.

Di particolare valore è lo stagno di Sassomassiccio per il suo aspetto paesaggistico legato alla natura paracarsica e per la sua grande biodiversità con abbondanza di anfibi e di invertebrati ed emergenze botaniche quali felci, graminacee ed alcune specie di orchidee.

This natural park, situated in the valley of the Lerna, is characterised by majestic rocky spurs. Xerophilous oak trees make up the main part of the vegetation of the valley, the fresher zones are covered with turkey oaks, hornbeams, poplars, aspens and chestnuts. Close to the water grows typical hygrophilous vegetation : the black poplar, the red willow and the black alder. The most important birds to be found in the zone include the tawny-owl, the eagle-owl, the buzzard, the sparrow-hawk and the kestrel, and the calanques are home to royal harriers. The natural beauty of Sassomassiccio pond can be put down to its landscape and the huge diversity of flora and fauna it offers: amphibians and invertebrates, and ferns and wild grasses - even a few species of orchids.
