I Longobardi si preoccuparono principalmente di rendere agibile e sicuro il passaggio dell'Appennino, vera e propria cerniera fra Nord e Sud potenziando al massimo la via di valico per il Passo della Croce Arcana, che avrebbe permesso un'agile comunicazione fra la pianura lombarda e le terre toscane d'oltre crinale.

Attualmente il luogo rappresenta un importante punto di riferimento escursionistico fra chi risale dal versante Toscano (Cutigliano), chi giunge da Fanano e chi percorre il sentiero 00 del C.A.I. (percorso di crinale).

Presso il cippo degli Alpini, la prima domenica d'agosto, si tiene la tradizionale "Festa degli Alpini" e altro importante appuntamento è per il 10 agosto (S. Lorenzo) per osservare la volta celeste nella notte delle stelle cadenti.

The Longobards were very concerned about making the passageway through the Apennines safe and secure because it was a vital linking point between the North and South. They developed the Croce Arcana pass as a communication route between the Lombard plains and the Tuscan highlands on the other side of the mountains. The pass is now extremely popular with hikers and mountaineers, from those who arrive from the Tuscan side of the slopes (Cutigliano) to those who come from Fanano, or those who have taken the Italian Alpine Club's (C.A.I.) mountaintop path (number 00) .

On the first Sunday of August the Alpine regiments hold their traditional festival here, near their boundary stone. Another important date is the night of 10 August, the festival of San Lorenzo, when the mountain pass makes the perfect place for watching shooting stars.
