                                                    Pieve Romanica di San Michele

Questa Chiesa, la cui origine risale probabilmente al periodo di dominazione longobarda come testimonierebbe l'intitolazione, è fonte di una antica tradizione che vuole che gli abitanti di Pievepelago, Fiumalbo e Riolunato vi si recassero in processione accedendo all'interno da tre porte distinte.

L'origine di tale usanza è da ricercarsi negli effetti della guerra di ribellione che Obizzo da Montegarullo, nei primi anni del '400, mosse nei confronti del Marchese Niccolò III d'Este e che portò alla distruzione di S.Michele ed alla suddivisione del territorio fra i tre comuni sopra citati.

La parte più antica della Pieve è l'abside che mantiene pregevoli decorazioni sia sugli elementi della finestrella centrale che sulla cornice sotto lo sporto della copertura dove interessanti sono le piccole mensole con figure apotropaiche.

                                                    The Romanesque parish church of San Michele

This church probably dates back to the period of the Longobard rule (a belief supported by the name). Tradition has it that the inhabitants of Pievepelago, Fiumalbo and Riolunato walked here in a procession and entered the church from three different doors. This custom originates in the aftermath of the war waged by Obizzo Da Montegarullo in the early fourteen hundreds against the marquis Niccolò III d'Este, which destroyed San Michele and divided the three towns. The oldest part of this church is the apse, which boasts beautiful decorations on both the central window and the frame underneath the projection of the shutter. Particularly interesting are the little corbels with figures which were believed to ward off evil and danger.
