La piazzetta che raccoglie il nucleo di Lama bassa ha avuto origine dal luogo di raduno della gente, che conveniva già nel Trecento a un antico mercato e alla fiera di S. Matteo, chiamata appunto "Fiera del Mercatello".

The little square, the heart of the village of Lama Bassa, was originally a meeting place. As early on as the 14^th century a market was held there, as well as the fair for St Matthew's day, called the  'Fiera del Mercatello' ('Little Market Fair').
