 E' situato nella Valle dello Scoltenna e del Rio Torto, protetto da alte cime quali il Monte Cimone, il Monte Cantiere e il Cento Croci, immerso nel verde dei boschi di conifere, faggi, castagni che gli danno una dimensione di quiete e tranquillità.

Il  nome Riolunato, è legato alla limpidezza delle acque dello Scoltenna che qui scorrono. Vi era un castello (di cui oggi rimangono solo le rovine) attorno al quale si svolgeva tutta la vita locale, che sovrastava da un vicino colle.

L'attuale abitato prese vita invece attorno al XVI secolo, quando divenne comune autonomo.

Dell'epoca medievale (XII sec. circa) rimangono parecchie case: Casa Ferrari, Casa Rocchi, Villa Tosi e Casa Gestri, al cui interno si trova un affresco del 1472.

E' presente una Chiesa, costruita su una precedente del 1485, dedicata a San Giacomo. All'interno si trova un affresco del '400 (Annunciazione e Battesimo di Cristo) attribuito alla scuola di Guido Reni.

Situated in the valley of the Scoltenna and the Rio Torto and protected by various high peaks including Cimone, Cantiere and Cento Croci, Riolunato is hidden among the peace and tranquillity of lush greenery and conifer, chestnut and beech-filled woods. The town is named after the limpid water of the 'rio' Scoltenna, which flows through it. Where today only ruins remain, there was once a castle on the slope of  a hill, which was the hub of all local life.

The present residence was actually erected around the 16^th century, when the village became an autonomous centre. There are also a number of mediaeval houses (circa 12^th century) which belonged to noble families: the Ferraris, the Rocchis, the Tosis and the Gestris, the house of the latter containing a fresco which dates back to 1472. The church, built on the site of an older one,  is dedicated to S. James. Inside there is a 15^th-century fresco of the 'Annunciation and Baptism of Christ' ('Annunciazione e Battesimo di Cristo'), which  is attributed to the school of Guido Reni.
